Dallas: Beer, Beer, and More Beer / by Nathalie Klinck

JFK Memorial. Dallas, TX. January 22 2017.

We thought we had already encountered the nicest people that we would come across over the course of this road trip, and then we got to Dallas. Dallas ameliorated our mood. It wasn’t a mood resulting from interaction with the unsavory people we have yet to encounter, it was from winds gusting at 25 miles per hour, attacking our yellow submarine from every angle as I tried to keep it afloat (for four, and then five, and then six hours) on the I-30.

Brain Dead Brewing. Dallas, TX. January 22 2017.

We had come prepared with an extensive list of sights and sounds for Dallas, but lacking both in nutritional (and moral) fiber, decided to abstain from bar-hopping in exchange for produce-shopping. We arrived at the Dallas Farmers’ Market and landed smack dab next to a green ’78 VW bus-turned-photo booth. We snapped photos donning only their finest garments (multi-coloured boa, ‘60s shades) and went on to explore the market itself. There we found little produce, but did find local beer (resolutions start slow, okay?) and Texan patrons to nurture the future of our journey. One gentleman we’ll never forget is Sam: a dreamer, explorer, and straight up grounded dude. He grew up in Dallas but spent the last twenty years of his life working at a brewery in San Francisco. Sam drowned us in hops, yeast, barley, water, and recommendations for the coming weeks. We left full (fried chicken and a ‘cauliflower steak’ for me), spent the night exploring the ‘scene’, met a handful of other locals (one of whom we even carted to the JFK memorial in the van for a nighttime shoot!), and continued south. We loved Dallas. We couldn’t get our hands on a Public Art Walk map (still bitter), but we loved Dallas.
